What is the WUSV World Championship Universal ?
The WUSV World Championship Universal is an international competition for German Shepherd Dogs and is considered a highlight in both working dog sport and conformation.
Organized by the World Union of German Shepherd Dog Associations (WUSV), this event brings together top teams from around the world to showcase their abilities in both performance and breed conformation.
This unique championship combines the IGP working dog trial with a conformation show—an exceptional combination in the dog sport world.
Origin and Purpose of the “Universal” Format
The Universal Championship was inspired by the original breeding philosophy of German Shepherd founder Max von Stephanitz.
His vision: "To breed a working dog that is universally capable."
Staying true to this mission, the Universal World Championship was created in 2011, first held in Austria, and is now hosted annually in different countries.
Each year, the WUSV member nations present some of the world’s most beautiful and capable German Shepherds.
The goal is clear: both working ability and physical structure are equally evaluated to crown the most versatile German Shepherd Dog.
Competition Disciplines

IGP (International Working Dog Trial): A versatile trial for working dogs that includes three phases—tracking, obedience, and protection work. These evaluate the dog’s skills in scent work, control, and defensive behavior.

Conformation Show (“Schau”): A breed evaluation where qualified judges assess the dogs according to the official breed standard of the German Shepherd. Physical structure, movement, expression, and temperament all contribute to the overall score.
